What is a gynaecologist?
A gynaecologist is a doctor who specialises in women’s health matters, specifically to do with the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries.
To become a specialist gynaecologist in Melbourne, a person has to undertake 6 years’ training at University to become a medical doctor, then, after at least 2 years of work as a junior doctor at a hospital, undertake at least another 6 years of specialty training in hospitals. This is not to mention two gruelling examinations.
During specialty training, a gynaecologist learns to assess and treat many complicated medical conditions as well as perform surgical operations. At the end of training and after passing difficult examinations, a specialist gynaecologist is awarded a FRANZCOG (Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaegologists) by the Royal College in Melbourne.
